PPTP doesn't have the cryptographic weakness the initial MS  
implementation had, doesn't require any special kernel module (it's  
PPP over GRE) and just works with a majority of software and products  
on the market.

You will find L2TP a lot harder to make it work (if at all) with the  
varying devices out there.
