/etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo has this:

#released updates
[updates]
name=CentOS-$releasever - Updates
mirrorlist=http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=$releasever&arch=$basearch&repo=updates
#baseurl=http://mirror.centos.org/centos/$releasever/updates/$basearch/
gpgcheck=1
enabled=1
priority=1
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-CentOS-5

But anyway /var/cache/yum/updates/mirrorlist.txt finally got updated and
the problem has been solved. I'm still wondering why I couldn't update
the file in the first place, though.

Glad to hear it resolved itself automatically.  It probably just has something to do with you trying to update so close to the official release time.
