Thanks for the reply! Looking at the specs the hd is sata. Also the documents for rhel are they the same for centos? I'm looking for items to help me learn/gain knowledge.

Is the drive IDE (PATA) or SATA? If SATA, you will need a proper SATA
driver. As a *guess* (which worked for the SATA controller on my
desktop motherboard), try adding the 'irqpoll' kernel parameter:
