I find that hard to believe, considering that CentOS 5 (5.0!) shipped
with version 4.1.1-52.el5 of gcc.

Would you care to double check your facts? Check the contents of
/etc/redhat-release, rpm -q centos-release, rpm -q gcc, etc.
