A simple to use tool is available from  http://www.logmein.com. The free
version of logmein should do what you want.
Or they do "Hamachi" for Windows and Linux which will create a
"personal" VPN for you, which means you can then use rdesktop direct to
the XP machine.

Of course, there's no guarantee these services will be around in 3 years
time....
