Now, if this is the sort of SmartArray raid controller which takes over and manages the other SCSI channels, maybe you have to go into the BIOS (or the SmartArray BIOS) and disable this. pertinent info from DMESG... I bet you plugged your tape into a SmartArray port rather than a onboard(?) SCSI port.
