Yes, that is a known problem (also happens with real hardware) with the 
5.2 install kernel. See <http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=2912> and <https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=443853> which you somehow missed
when you read the Release Notes at <http://wiki.centos.org/Manuals/ReleaseNotes/CentOS5.2> (Known issues section).

That should work. Only the 5.2 install kernel has those issues, current 
kernels (should) work.
