Indeed, looking at my /etc/profile I see the following:

if [ -x /usr/bin/id ]; then
        USER="`id -un`"
        LOGNAME=$USER
        MAIL="/var/spool/mail/$USER"
fi

Is there anything else needed to help Robert debug this?  I have this
working on CentOS 5.2 and "Xvnc -version" shows:
Xvnc version TightVNC-1.3.9
