net-snmp? I didn't have much knowledge about SNMP until yesterday either 
where I started to play with getting readings from sensors via SNMP. Just 
look in the snmpd.conf. There's some description and there's commented stuff. 
You uncomment that, change the values for network and community (so nobody 
knows your community) and off you go. Really easy, at least that part. Much 
more difficult to actually make use of it and how to make use of a vendor-
specific MIB.
