It has (only just) spawned from a non-open, non-free system (RHN satellite) so it was easy to only use one database, so why wouldn't they use Oracle?

They plan to make it work with Pg, MySQL, etc.

Oracle XE is free and will work with Spacewalk but there's a few bugs which exist in this environment.
