You might need to post more info. Here on a box-stock fully updated
CentOS 5 (haven't booted the new kernel yet)

$ uname -a
Linux centos501.homegroannetworking 2.6.18-53.1.14.el5 #1 SMP Wed Mar 5
11:36:49 EST 2008 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux

$ cat /etc/redhat-release 
CentOS release 5 (Final)

$ lsb_release -a
LSB
Version:    :core-3.1-ia32:core-3.1-noarch:graphics-3.1-ia32:graphics-3.1-noarch
Distributor ID: CentOS
Description:    CentOS release 5 (Final)
Release:        5
Codename:       Final

Using GNOME Terminal 2.16.0, all works as expected.

$ echo \\
\
$
