In the output from the gzip -dc <initrdfile> | cpio -idumv
is a file named init. Look around this area.

   echo Creating root device.
   mkrootdev -t ext3 -o defaults,ro /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00
   echo Mounting root filesystem.
