I have installed both:

jdk-6u5-linux-i586-rpm.bin
jre-6u5-linux-i586-rpm.bin

But no Java plugin in Firefox.

I have written a complete HOWTO here:

Scroll down to "Installation du plugin Java". It's in french, but the most interesting parts are in plain shell lingo :oD
I think I followed your instructions (I am dyslexic and basically flunked High School Spanish back in the '60s), but still not working. Here is what I get:

/usr/sbin/alternatives --display java

java - status is manual.
link currently points to /opt/jre1.6.0_05/bin/java
/usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.4.2-gcj/bin/java - priority 1420
