I think this started after I did an upgrade from 5 to 5.1 via dvd install.

First make sure you do not have any line like:
exclude=kernel -OR-
exclude=kernel*
in /etc/yum.conf or /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo
Then try updating the kernel by:
yum -d5 update kernel
Does the output show any hint?
