All of the above could certainly be caused by faulty hardware. I would run
memtest on the machine for a while and see what it comes up with. I believe
you can run it from the installer disk by typing "memtest" at the prompt.

I memtest'ed, as you suggest, before this attempt to install. (This is the 2nd attempt; the 1st one was cumbered with errors related to mediacheck.)
The test (default settings, ~4hrs, 5 passes) was w/o errors.
I guess there is no harm in memtest'ing more.
