As expected, the solution was indeed wery simple, and was found
within 10 seconds after reading your crucial hint:
>NAT and bridged are 2 different settings. Shut down the VM, change
the setting for the interface
>and restart.
For some reason which is beyond me, as opposed to VMware, indeed it
was set to 'shared network' instead of bridged! Switching it to
bridged, and then manually setting the IP address as desired in
CentOS works a charm.
