invalid values. If you've put something that isn't valid, it just fails
without explaining.

This is the error checking in Nahant. Those are line numbers.

     33 exec kdm $* >/dev/null 2>&1
     34 exec xdm $* >/dev/null 2>&1
     35

If none of those takes, you aren't going to get a GUI login.
