  It's the ICH8 intel chipset family.

  The installer does work when I change the SATA operation to "Legacy
  mode" in the BIOS. (alltough a bit slow)

  Yes, off course. Rumours have it FC6 works on Optiplex 745. So I suppose
  CentOS 5 will also be working on those systems.
