It would be helpful if you could give us some more information about
what happens:
The output of "rpm -q centos-release" for example and the output of "yum
-d5 update".

here the output i'm getting from the above commands:
rpm -q centos-release gives centos-release-4-4.2 and autoupdate is off
# /sbin/chkconfig --list yum
yum 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off
the last command gave the following:
# yum -d5 update
