Actually have used it on a PIII 750 with a classic radeon with 32mb of ram and it worked well as long as the screen res was under 1024x768. The limit was that r100 only supported textures upto 1024x1024. Technically recent versions of Compiz can support either using AIGLX or XGL for compositing the desktop. Fedora uses AIGLX with the Xorg 7.1 drivers or nVidia's 96xx series drivers. Now getting back to the CentOS related portion, I would not attempt to get Compiz on CentOS. You are at least going to need to replace more RPMS than I care to think about and most likely will break quite a bit. If you want the cube desktop try out FC 6, I run it at home as my desktop and so far it's been stable.
