Wow, that's pretty strange then.  What motherboard is it?  Maybe you
need to install an audio card.  :)

The motherboard is a Tyan Thunder K8HM.  It's a dual-Opteron server
board.

Just what I want to do... add an audio card to a rack-mounted server!

I had some dodgy Tyan K8WE and K8HM boards that would randomly wedge on a soft reset. Updating the bios to whatever was freshest at the time made it better.
