Yes, i have same problem with VIA cpu and centos 4.3 ,
using i586 kernel installation no problem .

I use via cpu + 512 mb memory and centos 4.3, turn off apmd just for squid
and internet sharing without problem
( if apmd turn on , sometimes it lock up)

I use via cpu + 1 GB mem and cent os 4.3 , it is not stable for mail server
qmail , spamassasin , bayes , clamd .
i don't know the lock up reason every several hour / day . maybe failure
mainboard ..
i change to Intel 805D and activate SMP , and no lock up until now.

I tried install 4.4 on an old Via 800mhz box. i386 of course.
The installer dies pretty quick.
I thought the via was i386 compatible?
Is there something special to do.
