I hear you...

Yeah I usually just use it to see if something answers so to speak, or to
see if a firewall or something knocks it down and refuses to allow "connect"
in general.

It helped in the OLD OLD days when I started in the early to mid 1990's more
so than now except telnetting to various tcp ports and stepping through
tests etc
