Maybe your see the messages in /var/log/messages but also in the console?

Then you need to fix klogd, like this:
/etc/sysconfig/syslog
KLOGD_OPTIONS="-x -c 3"

The "-c 3" does the magic, don't forget to:
service syslog restart
