It was probably to change /etc/redhat-release to read...

Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4 (Nahant)

Backup /etc/redhat-release...

cp /etc/redhat-release /etc/redhat-release.`date -I`

Then edit it and add the string above, install your package and then
switch back.
