to answer both you and Les - craig is a real linux user and has a passwd
and can login via ssh...

# ssh craig@srv1

this is exasperating to say the least.

# ls -l /var/log/nxserver.log
-rw-------  1 nx root 0 Jan 23 15:54 /var/log/nxserver.log

since it's empty and /var/log/messages and /var/log/secure also give
absolutely no hints
