mplayer compile on x86_64

I am trying to get mplayer going on x86_64.
I used the following command

./configure --with-x11libdir=/usr/X11R6/lib64 
--with-codecsdir=/usr/local/lib/codecs
make
make install

It erros with the requested audio codec is not found.
I have alsa devel package installed...

Does anyone have mplayer running on x86_64 and wish to share
the compile instructions?
