Why are dots in username & groupname no longer allowed?

Unless I'm misreading the RFC, it does allow dots in usernames?

   nai         =  username
   nai         =/ "@" realm
   nai         =/ username "@" realm

   username    =  dot-string
   dot-string  =  string
   dot-string  =/ dot-string "." string
