Extending Network - OT

Hello,

What things come to your minds and consider when need to upgrade a
network, extending it?

I'm trying to extend the faculty network to optimize services. Know
this is a little out of topic but your experienced suggestions can be
useful for other newbies like me (think so).

I'll strongly appreciate the knowledge and time involved in your replays.

PD: some howto or docs would be appreciated too.
