I have found a non-standard port to be satisfactory so far.

APF firewall has a built-in feature, but I am not sure it works on 
non-standard ports.

I am thinking about installing this, http://denyhosts.sourceforge.net/, 
in case any persistent script finds my port.
   I have not tried this yet, so I do not know.
