Hi, not-ancient versions of Linux MD RAID cope with these issues via two different means:
- a write bitmap to track dirty disk regions;
- an embedded bad list sector to remap such sectors when appropriate (and without failing the entire array, if possible).

Still, splitting a disk into multiple slices has the specific advantage of using different RAID levels on different dataset (which can be very valuable in some cases).
