My understanding for the reason it was removed from EPEL-7 was that the
module dependencies grew to stuff which wouldn't work on EL7 for some
reason. Several of those modules also contain C code so usually need to be
recompiled to match.

For the simplest EPEL-7 fixes, I would take the packages from Fedora 18/19
and either recompile them or try to use them. That is more likely to work
than EPEL-6 which is Fedora 11/12 based.
