yum grouplist
does not show "X Window system" for me, on CentOS 7.

yum remove "non existent stuff"
gives me

Warning: group non existent stuff does not exist.
Maybe run: yum groups mark install (see man yum)
Error: No packages in any requested group available to install or update

That seems consistent with what you get.
