It will help you to avoid future unpleasant surprises if you take the time to read up on the Hierarchical File System (HFS) and its relation the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard (FHS). The directories /run and /var/run, which should be the same place on properly configured systems, are solely to be used for run-time data ONLY.
