(Native german speaker here also.) I tried what you suggested: # localectl set-x11-keymap fr_CH-latin1 pc105 nodeadkey As is to be expected, this modifies /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/00-keyboard.conf: # Read and parsed by systemd-localed. It's probably wise not to edit this file # manually too freely. Section "InputClass" Identifier "system-keyboard" MatchIsKeyboard "on" Option "XkbLayout" "fr_CH-latin1" Option "XkbModel" "pc105" Option "XkbVariant" "nodeadkey" EndSection Unfortunately, to no avail. When I create a new user from here, KDE's keyboard still defaults to US. This looks like a CentOS bug to me: unable to define a non-US system-wide keyboard when using KDE.
