With a minimal GNOME desktop installed (no Evolution, no Thunderbird), the system menu shows the clock in the upper right corner of the screen. When you click on that, you get a little overview window sporting a calendar on the left side and an (empty) list of appointments on the right side. Unfortunately that preview window seems to be preconfigured for Evolution only, so I wonder if there's any way to get rid of it.
