Why is yum not liked by some?

It is more of a mental block regarding the inefficiency of having to
store a snapshot of a massive repository just to be able to copy
a few of the individual files correctly.

How do I tell if my snapshot copy is consistent or if incomplete changes
were being made as I copied it?
