MATE was a solution for me too. I used gnome on my FreeBSD workstation and
laptop till FreeBSD upgraded to ugly new Gnome, then I switched to Mate
and am happy ever since.

I convinced myself to not blame free software developers for making fancy
(in their opinion) things that interact with me way different from what I
am used to and what I like to stay the way it was. This (blooming
fanciness) is often their only reward for hard work they do. And some of
us who prefer not to accept what hits our productivity, flee elsewhere,
thus providing feedback...
