Can't mount FAT32 partition

I currently use:
/dev/hda8               /home/lowen/data        vfat    uid=500,gid=500 0 0

for a vfat partition.  I also have given uid 500, gid 500 access to the mount 
point; is /mt/windows accessible to uid 512, gid 1002?
