Thanks to Earl for the NUX repo recommendation. Good VLC and ffmpeg versions (for CentOS) here.

From what i can tell, atrpms died a death earlier this year or the end of last

Have never used ATRPMS but a good alternative for at least VLC is Nux repo;
I have been using it since EL 6 and it works just as good on EL 7.
