I'll keep an eye on the bug. For the sake of the archives, this is now fixed (since today), the bug is closed upstream and the EPEL6 stable repo is now showing a fixed hdf5-1.8.5.patch1-9.el6 package, allowing me to upgrade to CentOS 6.6 (even if http://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/6/x86_64/repoview/ doesn't show the package update yet).
