I should have said that I did run
  preupg -l
after
  yum install redhat-upgrade-tool preupgrade-assistant-contents
as suggested in
<http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/CentOSUpgradeTool>.
Maybe that creates a test grub2/grub.cfg ?
