that board is expensive because its ancient, there's likely very little 
NOS (new old stock) left in the channel.

the 865G chipset was new in May 2003.   An Atom based netbook has more 
horsepower.  so does an android phone.

re: $300 desktops, yes you can find them, usually last years consumer 
big-box store crap-quality, on clearance sale...  frankly, those kinds 
of systems really aren't very good quality, although if/when they work, 
they'll do the job
