You're right. I have to change the translation to UTF-8 and now it works.

Which SSH client are you using? If you're using Putty you need to
switch its character set translation to UTF-8. I assume this will
apply to other terminals if they don't default to UTF-8 or somehow
detect the capabilities of the server.
