Duhhhhh... Lost: small, squishy wrinkled grey thing. If found, return
here, sentimental value only.

I think
rsync -HPavx whatsit.img backup_dir/
ln backup_dir/whatsit.img backup_dir/whatsit.<timestamp>
solves my problem.
