I just installed gnome-devel-docs with the objective of having a local copy
of
the gnome hig-book and now that I have it installed I don't know how to use
it.

I had assumed that it would show up in devhelp but it doesn't. What I have
is
a bunch of XML files in /usr/share/gnome/help/hig-book/C, and when I try to
view one with firefox it tells me "This XML file does not appear to have any
style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below. "

What am I supposed to use to read the hig-book files?

I'm trying to rsync a 8TB data folder containing squillions of small files
and it's taking forever (i.e. weeks) to get anywhere.
I'm assuming the slow bit is check-summing everything with a single CPU
(even though it's on a 12-core server ;-( )
Is it possible to do something simple like scp the whole dir in one go so
they're duplicates in the first instance, then get rsync to just keep them
in sync without an initial transfer?

Or is there a better way?

use the rsync mode that goes off file timestamp and size. the
checksuming block algorithm is only useful on large files that get small
random block changes.

On a ldap enabled CentOS 6.3 x64 system, I try to make it so home
directories are auto-created. I added this :

session required pam_mkhomedir.so skel=/etc/skel/ umask=0077

to my /etc/pam.d/system-auth

And it does nothing. I restarted messagebus (I've seen references to
that) and sshd, and logs don't mention anything in regards to
pam_mkhomedir...

Any hints ?

I use tar and ttcp for an initial transfer:

On the receiving end:

ttcp -l5120 -r | tar xf -

On the transmitter:

tar cf - . | ttcp -l5120 -t name-of-receiver

Note: The files are transmitted without encryption.

I easily get 110 Mbytes/sec. on a gigabit connection.

If you need encryption, and your transfer is CPU limited, you should
investigate which cipher to use. In my case arcfour128 is the fastest,
so I use:

rsync --rsh='/usr/bin/ssh -c arcfour128' ...

after the initial transfer with ttcp.

Hi all

I would like to install CentOS on this:
http://www.lannerinc.com/x86_Network_Appliances/FW-7520
- No VGA/DVI
- Only a "console" port (the old 9600 baudrate one)
- Boot on USB actived by default
Would you know a tutorial helping on installing CentOS on this?

I guess I have to
- download the minimal iso,
- 'dd'-copy it to a flash USB drive
- setup some files to use the console instead of vga (which ones...?)

My desktopo side, I already have minicom et al installed, just looking for.

Please be advised that latest Remmina requires GTK3 and as such cannot
be built on/for EL6.

I would suggest an automated kickstart install,
so you would not have to care about console access...
If you still need it, google for "kickstart serial console".
You can also use vnc...

I try and try and search, this morning on the CentOS Forum to find nothing

The solution is to follow the instructions in this CentOS wiki:

Hi,

I install a new 4 Port GBit Server with centos 6.3 and I'd like to use
nic bonding.

Searching for a good how to pinted to this page:

http://www.how2centos.com/centos-6-channel-bonding/

My question: Is this the current, good way to bond the 4 ports?

The other question: What should I set on the cisco switch for the
Port-channel options?

As far as I understand for performance and redundancy I will use LACP
and balance-alb.

The switches are 6500 VSS so they should act as "one physical device" as
required by LACP.

thanks for any suggestion and comments . G?tz

That's a neat device you have there.

If you had a DB9 serial port I'd say you'll really want a null modem
cable to interface with the device (but it doesn't) - hopefully you
know or have the cable necessary to talk to it via the RJ-45 console.

You may consider using CentOS 5 for the reason below.

Does your appliance's CPU support PAE?
Starting with CentOS 6, the i686 kernels have PAE enabled. If you
need one without PAE you'll have to compile it yourself. Not a huge
deal, but certainly not as simple.

Your best bet in any instance (CentOS 5 or 6) is to build the OS on
another piece of hardware or a VM and copy it over to your CF card.
There are a few items you'll want to do to reduce writes to your CF
card and tune it for the embedded hardware [0].

Hope this helps!
