Thank you for taking the time to try to help.  I really appreciate it.

I didn't change anything, as far as I know, and now it's working. WTF?  
I love it when that happens.  It's so much easier than having to fix it.

Here's what I got from yum whatprovides */i18npool.uno.so:

1:openoffice.org-core-3.2.1-19.6.el6_0.5.i686 : Core modules for 
OpenOffice.org
Repo        : base
Matched from:
Filename    : /usr/lib/openoffice.org/basis3.2/program/i18npool.uno.so

VirtualBox didn't work last night either.  I didn't find that 
surprising.  I haven't had opportunity to try it tonight but I'm not 
expecting much.  The trouble shooting documentation said that I would 
find a clue as to why in the log file but apparently it ran perfectly up 
until it crashed. ;-)
