Hmmm, I didn't think USB3 was even supported in CentOS 5.  What does:
dmesg|grep xhci
tell you?  Perhaps it's running in ehci USB2.0 mode.... and maybe that doesn't work too well?

USB3 is supposed to be fully supported in EL6, but following the SL lists shows that that seems to be somewhat problematic with the current kernel and some hardware.
