If you hit Alt+F1, you'll see the "regular" install/boot text. If you hit Alt+F2, you'll see debug outputs of portions of the install/boot process. Alt+F3 gives you another console from which you can e.g. run various tools (dmesg, ps, df, fsck, etc).
