[Centos] Error on attempted upgrade ..

We are seeing some very strange errors and hope that someone out there
has seen this before and has an idea of how to overcome ..

Upgrading from RH9 to CentOS 3.4 on a IBM Netfinity 5000

After booting to disk 1 of the CD set we enter "linux upgradeany" and it
starts the boot process and gets to 

Uncompressing Linux ....

Invalid Compressed Format (err=2)

--System Halted

Now we thought it could be a bad CD burn so we burned again .. same
error .. Then we thought maybe it was the media type so we burned on a
different media .. Same error .. Help!
